For the movie, “Beyond the Embers: Vol. 1” produced by ASL Films, we have confirmed two locations for the September 12 and 13 showing.

The movie will begin at 8 pm. The second showing, on Saturday, September 13, will be at the Southern Utah Deaf & Hard of Hearing Programs (SUDHHP) Center at St. George. This showing will begin at 7 pm. The flyers are on page 8 and 9. You can purchase your tickets online. Please share it with your friends through Facebook and other social media. JR Goff, Dan Hoffman and I are excited to attend the NAD conference in Atlanta. We will give you updates about the conference in the August Bulletin issue. We will have biannual elections of NAD board and region members. Please check it out through Twitter and Instagram.

Wedding Anniversaries Celebrated
June 7, 2014 – Lynn and Rosie Losee was honored at their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house hosted by their children and held at the Salt Lake Valley 1st Ward. They were married on June 5, 1964 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on a pretty day despite a rainy evening at their wedding reception at the Salt Lake Branch for the Deaf. They have 5 daughters and two sons; 26 grandchildren and one on the way; three great grandchildren. Their children surprised them with a shadow box which included Lynn’s father’s uniform, badges and flag, and Lynn’s mother’s blue dress that she wore at Lynn and Rosie’s wedding. Lynn’s father served in Germany during World War II under General Patton from 1943 to 1945.
June 28, 2014 – Dave and Shanna Mortensen’s 60th wedding anniversary was celebrated at a luncheon held at the Lion House. They were united for time and all eternity on June 15, 1954 at the Salt Lake LDS Temple with a wedding reception held in Ogden, Shanna’s home town. He was recently honored for his for his tireless efforts to fight for the rights of deaf people in education and the workplace. He retired from NAC in 1986 and Valley Mental Health in 1996. Shanna was a stay at home mother until 1966 when the last child was born, working at Becton Dickson and taking a medical leave in 1974. Their children are Kevin, Kristi, Karin (deceased), Kent and Kory; they have 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
2014 UAD Friendship Day at Lagoon

UAD Friendship Day at Lagoon is around the corner! It is on July 26 (fourth Saturday. We have reserved a new terrace, the Cascade Terrace. It is located farther east and north of the former Oak Terrace.
Utah Association of the Deaf hosts the UAD Friendship Day at Lagoon every year in July, a tradition that is many years old.
The special discount admission price is $38.95 plus tax for an all-day pass and the youth price (under 48 inches in height) is $35.95 plus tax. The regular price is $47.95. All rides open at 11 am.
Lagoon tickets are available now at the UAD Bookstore… you don’t need to pay us… just go and pick up the tickets and pay at the Lagoon ticket booth… ONE TICKET IS GOOD FOR UP TO EIGHT PEOPLE. Parking is ten dollars per car, no discount, sorry.

Can you believe it has almost been a month since school let out? While the children are relaxing and enjoying their summer, JMS has been hard at work completing and distributing report cards, cleaning the building, moving classrooms, preparing next year’s calendar, collecting end of year data and administering summer programs.
JMS is offering a number of summer programs. We have already completed an ASL camp, art camp, babysitting & CPR camp and a volleyball & basketball camp. There are also thematic camps for the preschool age students. It is our hope that these camps will keep the students active and continue to promote language growth. We have several more camps throughout the month of July and a dance & drama camp in August.
We are also seeking to hire 3 new teachers for JMS. There are preschool, 3rd grade and resource teaching positions available. We are looking for strong candidates that believe passionately in the ASL/English philosophy for educating deaf students. Interested applicants need to email a letter of interest, resume and a copy of any degrees to our Human Resource Specialist, Carol DeRosier at carold@usdb.org. You are also welcome to carbon copy me at michellet@usdb.org.
There are also several paraprofessional positions open as well. To apply for these positions please search for an “ASL/English Teacher Aide” under the website statejobs.utah.gov. You can refine your search by selecting, “Education” as a category, “Salt Lake City” as the location and “400 Utah State Board of Education” for the department. Interviews will happen in July for the upcoming school year.

Deaf PIP Update

Summer in PIP is one of our quietest times of the year. Older children are home for the summer and families are off on camping trips, short and long family vacations, and playful family activities, and our staff are also off on their family vacations. Of course we continue to do home visits through the summer, but we take a break from Toddler Group, ASL Story Time and Listening Time until the start of the new school year.
During the summer we take advantage of opportunities to learn language outdoors, teach families communication and language skills they can use on vacation and while out in the yard for cookouts, gardening, games and sporting events. We encourage parents to point out the many sounds of summer and to have fun with their children during the fun and excitement of the summer holidays.
Over the next two months I will be focusing on end of the year reports and on gathering data on our program for this past school year. I look forward to sharing that information with you in August. We in PIP wish everyone a fun and safe summer!
