Another partnership – National Association of the Deaf and Pepsico are sponsoring a wonderful person who will perform ASL at Super Bowl XLVIII. Her name is Amber Zion, graduated at Rochester Institute of Technology. We are excited to have her as part of history. December 26, 2013 – Arwen Jewel, daughter April and Andy Trocki of Riverton. Arwen’s sister and brother, Alyssa, 6, and Andrew, 4, welcomed their new sibling.

Obituaries
January 22, 2014 – Edith Wheeler, 95, passed away. A native of Wisconsin, she attended Gallaudet College where she met her future husband Ned Wheeler. He passed away December 1981. Edith’s passions in life were golfing, bowling and playing cards and games with family and friends, and traveling around the world. A grand birthday party was held in her honor for her 95th birthday, August 2013 at Legacy House where she had resided for the last four years. She was buried beside her beloved Ned in Ogden.
Dog Classes Back
Classes will be held Tuesdays, beginning February 4 and ending March 25, 2014. It will be held in the gym of the Sanderson Community Center for the Deaf of Hard of Hearing, 5709 S 1500 W, Taylorsville.

11:30 am Mass Interpreted
Saint Vincent De Paul Catholic Church (1375 E Spring Lane, Salt Lake City) has been providing American Sign Language interpreting for the deaf for over 20 years. The 9:00 am Sunday Mass is interpreted every Sunday and beginning February 2, 2014, the 11:30 Mass will also be interpreted on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of each month. January has been an active month for JMS and we have lots coming up in the next few months. We began the month with several students competing in the annual Lego Robotics competition. We had two teams competing this year. Both teams worked very hard to develop robots that fulfilled a purpose in society. They also had to learn how to program their robot to accomplish various tasks during the competition. Both teams performed well and we are very proud of both teams.
We also participated in the Battle of the Books with other students within the Utah Schools for the Deaf. This competition is hosted by Gallaudet and encourages reading among deaf students. Each student is given 3 books to read in preparation for the competition. Then students come together to compete as a team and answer questions about each book against other schools for the deaf across the nation. This is done over videophone technology. Our teams did very well in the preliminary round, but fell a few points shy of advancing. We are delighted to participate and look forward to continual improvement.
Our girls and boys basketball teams have been working hard and playing lots of games. They are learning a good work ethic along with how to work as a team. The final week of January our students attended the WSBCC at the Washington School for the Deaf. We will report the outcome of this in next month’s bulletin.
Next month we will have another group of students attending the Academic Bowl in Texas. In this competition our students must not only know the answers to questions, but they must respond quickly to advance in the competition. We wish them the best of luck.
Another important event happening right now is the legislative session. There will undoubtedly be many bills proposed that will affect USDB. We know there are 4 building blocks being proposed that effect the finances at the school. The first building block ensures that our teachers get increased funding. Each year our teachers get the average increase that teachers throughout the state received the previous year. This was written into state code a number of years ago, but needs to be requested annually. USDB is also requesting additional teaching positions to meet our ever-increasing enrollment. This building block is vital to continue to meet the needs of our students.
We also have requests for one time funding to create a database management tool that would streamline functions of the school. Most other districts throughout the state and across the nation have already been using a database management tool for some time. We simply want to bring USDB up to current standards.
Finally we are asking that the legislature support the funding of a new building to be located on the JMS campus. Again, this will address increasing enrollment. Any support you can give in making this happen would be greatly appreciated!
As a reminder, USDB will be hosting its annual day on the hill February 6th. The public is welcome to visit and we encourage you write your legislator and ask s/he to stop by and see why USDB services are critical in the State of Utah. Any support you can give by advocating for these proposals with your own legislator would be greatly appreciated.
USU Winter Workshops to be Presented
The Deaf Education Student Association’s (DESA) Winter Workshops at Utah State University are quickly approaching! The workshops will be presented February 7-8, 2014. Our keynote speaker will be Peter Cook! Additional workshop presenters are Michelle Tanner and Ellen Hanna from JMS and Nate Harrison from NMSD.

Overcoming Adversity: The Elizabeth Smart Story
