Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukkah! This year, it is the first time in 125 years that Thanksgiving and Hanukkah fall on the same day.
We wish you a Happy New Year in 2014. We reflect on 2013 with 5 new UAD board members. I am thrilled to have new faces and new energy. I look forward to working with them for the next two years.
Please save the date of Saturday, February 22 for the General Meeting and another event happening on the same day. We want to work with UTRID, ASLTA-UT, and SLCAD for community needs.
We encourage you to consider joining UAD as a member and show your support of UAD to become stronger. UAD needs your voice and opinions to help us move forward for our future generation.
Your donation to our community is great appreciated..
Have wonderful holidays and keep safe.

During the month of November JMS hosted the “College Rocks” event which invited deaf students throughout the state in middle school or high school to participate in a day focused on growing up and how to prepare for that eventuality. Several agencies across the valley serving deaf individuals were invited to present to the students. We would like to thank Carol MacNicholl, Eleanor McCowan, Jenefer Reudter, Wade Hester and Lindsey Wert for putting on such a fabulous event for our students.
Besides being wrapped up in the daily task of academia, several of our students have participated in field trips to the Clark Planetarium and as a culminating activity for reading the book, “Catching Fire,” our students were invited to an open captioned showing of the movie. It was a great way to being the Thanksgiving Break.
We have several upcoming events in the month of December that we would like to make you aware of:
1) Don’t miss any of our basketball games, as we compete throughout the state with other 1A teams. (See the basketball schedule posted in last month’s UAD Bulletin for specifics.) We appreciate the support we get from the fans.
2) The JMS student body will be having an all school trip to the City Creek Center for a day of learning and greeting Santa.
3) The annual JMS Winter Program will be held on December 19th from 10 – 11:30am. This event is typically standing room only. So, if you intend on coming, arrive early to get a seat.
4) If you are interested in contributing to a struggling family during this Holiday Season, JMS is coordinating a Sub for Santa drive for some students attending our school. If you are interested in contributing, please contact our Sarah Leathers at (801)464-2085 or by email at sarahl@usdb.org. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for all you do collectively and individually to support our school.

Want to learn a little about Utah Deaf history? There is a website, http://www.utahdeafhistory.com/, titled Utah Deaf Historical Digital Library, where you can read various articles – Utah Association of the Deaf, National Fraternal Society of the Deaf, Sanderson Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Gallaudet University (Utah connection), Deaf Latter-Day Saints, and more. Jodi Kinner spent several years of spare time to develop these articles and is commended for her devotion to the project. If you would like to contribute information or pictures that are missing from any of these articles, please contact Jodi at j_kinner@yahoo.com.
